One anchor, four registers.

One variable font — Roboto Flex — and four ways of speaking, all derived from a single anchor. Every deformation answers to a rule of the trade: width is duration, weight is projection, grade is articulation. Nothing is decorative.

The four registers

Clarté

Documentation · interface · help

One voice, in thirty languages

The register of long reading. Opened by width and optical size, never by thinness: it is the text people read most, so it must be the most comfortable.

wght 400 · wdth 128 · GRAD −20 · opsz 72 · slnt 0 — leading 1.62

Confidence

Editorial · research · long form

One voice, in thirty languages

Tightened, narrow column, small optical size. Intimacy comes from density, not italics — the slant stays at −3, enough to be felt, too little to tire.

wght 355 · wdth 82 · GRAD −45 · opsz 16 · slnt −3 — leading 1.42

Gravité

Enterprise · security · commitment

One voice, in thirty languages

Dense and compact. The weight comes from boldness; grade only confirms it. Narrowness grounds it and keeps it apart from Éclat.

wght 700 · wdth 92 · GRAD 120 · opsz 30 · slnt 0 — leading 1.34

Éclat

Launch · campaign · event

One voice, in thirty languages

Deployed, projected, sharp. Tight leading and wide negative tracking: it occupies space instead of filling it. The register of large format.

wght 760 · wdth 140 · GRAD 20 · opsz 110 · slnt −5 — leading 1.18

Floor rule

Below --t-2xs (12.8 px), the four registers become indistinguishable. The system falls back to Clarté, leading 1.5, tracking +0.01em. A system that says where it stops is more credible than one that claims to cover everything.

The anchor and the bounds

Weight 355 → 760 · Width 82 → 140 · Grade −45 → 120 · Slant −5 → 0. No use leaves these ranges. The anchor — 460 / 104 / 0 / 48 / 0 — never moves: it is the favicon, the footer, the business card. The four registers derive from it; they do not replace it.

The band is a notation, not a register

The rythmo band keeps its own block of tokens: width 72 → 151 around a base of 104, weight 480, optical size 60, green in / red out to a tenth of a frame. Its bounds are the notation's, not the brand text's: stretched text is a held sound, tightened text is a fast delivery, and the width offsets of one loop cancel out exactly.

The Japanese rule

An ideogram has a fixed width; distorting it is a fault. Duration is carried by aki — the spacing adjustment of Japanese typography — together with size and weight. Never the glyph.
